Australia has officially launched the new Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) visa ballot process for Indian citizens, marking a significant update for young Indian professionals aspiring to live, work, and explore opportunities in Australia.
Starting from June 24, 2025, young Indians between the ages of 18 and 30 can register their interest in the Work and Holiday visa via a ballot system. The initiative, introduced by the Australian Government, ensures a fair and transparent selection method for countries with high application demand, such as India, China, and Vietnam.
Applicants interested in the program must register through Australia's immigration portal, ImmiAccount, paying a nominal registration fee of AUD 25. Registrations remain open until July 15, 2025, with the first random selection slated for July 16, 2025. Additional selections will continue throughout the program year, concluding on April 30, 2026.
To be eligible for the Work and Holiday visa, Indian applicants must fulfill several key requirements. They must hold a valid Indian passport and a PAN card, possess educational qualifications comprising at least two years of post-secondary study, and demonstrate sufficient financial resources of approximately AUD 5,000 (around INR 4.5 to 5.5 lakh) to support their stay in Australia. Health insurance, though not mandatory, is highly recommended, and applicants might also need to meet health and character requirements, including police clearances.
Significantly, English proficiency tests like IELTS or PTE are not mandatory for Indian applicants, provided their education has been predominantly in English, thus easing one of the common barriers faced by visa applicants.
The Work and Holiday visa allows successful candidates to live and work in Australia for up to 12 months. It is important to note that selection through the ballot does not guarantee visa approval, as applicants must meet all visa requirements comprehensively.
For those fortunate enough to be selected, applications must be submitted within 28 days of receiving the 'Notification of Selection'. The visa application itself carries a fee of AUD 635.
This new ballot process underscores Australia's commitment to fostering cultural exchange and strengthening bilateral ties with India, providing an exciting opportunity for young, skilled professionals to broaden their horizons in Australia.
