Canada has been recognized as the second-best country in the world in 2023, according to a comprehensive ranking conducted by U.S. News in partnership with communications company WPP and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. The "2023 Best Countries rankings" assessed numerous factors, including a country's military and economic strength, as well as the quality of life enjoyed by its residents. This extensive evaluation encompassed 87 countries and was based on input from over 17,000 global citizens.


Respondents were also asked to associate countries with various qualities across ten subrankings, including attributes like power, cultural influence, heritage, and social impact. The data collected from these associations were then used to compile a list of the world's top countries, along with nearly 100 other distinctive rankings.


In this year's rankings, Canada claimed the second spot, surpassing Germany, primarily due to its remarkable performance in terms of agility. However, Switzerland continues to hold the title of the best country in the world for 2023, marking the sixth time it has secured this position.


Canada has also achieved top-five placements in three additional subrankings, most notably quality of life. Furthermore, Canada stands out by securing the first place in several attributes, including racial equity.


Switzerland's stronghold as the best country in the world remains unshaken for the second consecutive year. This small European nation particularly excels in the "Open for Business" subranking, underscoring its robust economic prowess. Switzerland retains a place in the top 10 in four other subrankings and claims the first position in the attribute related to perceptions of a country's safety.


Sweden has earned the third position, making a noteworthy leap of two places from its 2022 ranking. Sweden's exceptional performance includes ranking first in two subrankings: social purpose and quality of life. The country also maintains a strong presence in the top 10 in three other subrankings.


Following Sweden, Australia secured the fourth spot, marking a significant improvement of three positions compared to the previous year's rankings.


Canada's neighbor, the United States, occupies the fifth position, signifying a slight drop from its 2022 ranking. The U.S. has secured the top spot in three crucial subrankings: entrepreneurship, power, and agility.
