Canadian Passport Outranks U.S. Once Again in 2025 Global Power Ranking

Canada’s passport continues to hold its place among the most powerful travel documents in the world, outperforming the United States for the second time this year.

In the latest Henley Passport Index, released on July 22, the Canadian passport ranks 8th globally, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 184 countries. This puts Canada in a tie with the United Arab Emirates and Estonia, reaffirming its strong global standing.

Meanwhile, the U.S. passport has slipped to 10th, inching dangerously close to falling out of the top 10 for the first time since the index began in 2006.

While Canada dropped one position compared to January 2025, when it ranked 7th with access to 188 destinations, it continues to edge out the U.S. This ongoing lead is significant—especially considering January 2025 marked the first time Canada surpassed the U.S. in Henley’s rankings.

The report suggests Canada’s global mobility advantage stems from stable diplomatic relations, a strong visa-waiver network, and the passport’s efficiency in international travel and re-entry.

Top-Ranking Passports in 2025

According to the latest rankings:

#1: Singapore (visa-free access to 193 destinations)
#2: Japan and South Korea (190 destinations)
#3: Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain (189 destinations)

Canada, UAE, and Estonia follow closely in the 8th position (184 destinations), while the U.S. sits at 10th.

Who’s Gaining Ground?

Some countries have made remarkable progress:

India climbed eight spots to rank 77th, now offering visa-free access to 62 destinations.
Saudi Arabia saw the largest jump in visa-free access, adding four new countries to its list.

On the other hand, some nations saw notable declines. Over the last decade, Venezuela dropped 15 places, and the U.S. fell by eight, highlighting a long-term downward trend for traditionally strong passports.
