Nova Scotia's PNP Program Expansion: A Gateway for Healthcare Professionals.

Nova Scotia is opening new doors for foreign nationals in healthcare professions. The province recently announced the expansion of its Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) stream, making it easier for certain foreign nationals to immigrate to the region. This expansion will particularly benefit international students aspiring to become paramedics and pharmacy technicians.
The "International Graduates in Demand" (IGD) stream of Nova Scotia's PNP has been broadened to include these two essential healthcare occupations. This progressive move comes as a joint effort between Nova Scotia's Minister of Health, Michelle Thompson, and the Minister of Advanced Education, Brian Wong.
Before this expansion, the IGD stream allowed international graduates in various professions, such as nurse aides, orderlies, and early childhood educators, to seek employment in Nova Scotia. Now, paramedics and pharmacy technicians have joined the list of eligible candidates.
To qualify for immigration under this stream, candidates must meet specific criteria, including having a full-time permanent job offer from a Nova Scotia employer in one of the eligible occupations, being between the ages of 21 and 55, and possessing the necessary certifications and language proficiency.
Interested candidates can follow these steps to apply for immigration through the IGD PNP stream:
1. Upload the required documents and submit a completed application on the government website.
2. If approved, apply for permanent residence directly with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) within six months of receiving the provincial nomination certificate. Applicants can also request a Letter of Support for a temporary work permit from the Nova Scotia Office of Immigration, allowing them to stay in Nova Scotia while their application is being processed.
According to healthcare experts, Nova Scotia is in need of approximately 200 pharmacy technicians and an additional 150 to 200 paramedics in the coming years. This expanded stream addresses this growing demand while opening doors for international students and healthcare professionals.
Furthermore, healthcare professions across Canada are experiencing high demand. Top three healthcare careers in demand include registered nurses, personal support workers, and healthcare aides. In Nova Scotia, healthcare aides are also specifically eligible for immigration under the IGD stream.
With a significant number of job openings expected in healthcare occupations across the country, Canada continues to welcome skilled healthcare workers, including Nova Scotia, as it conducts category-based Express Entry draws to attract immigration candidates who can help address labor market challenges.
So far in 2023, Canada has conducted two healthcare category-based Express Entry draws. The first, on June 28, invited 500 candidates with a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of at least 476, while the second, on July 6, invited 1,500 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 463.
