South Australia Launches National Innovation Visa to Attract Global Talent

South Australia has unveiled a major opportunity for globally recognised talent to live and work in the state, thanks to the newly introduced National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858). This permanent visa is specifically designed for individuals with an internationally recognised record of outstanding achievement in their profession, sport, the arts, or academia and research.

What Is the National Innovation Visa?

The National Innovation Visa (NIV) is an invitation-only permanent residency pathway for established and emerging leaders who can drive innovation, productivity, and economic growth in Australia. The aim is to attract high-calibre individuals who will make significant contributions to the country’s future prosperity.

Applicants can apply from within Australia (if already holding a substantive visa) or from offshore. There are no age restrictions, but candidates under 18 or over 55 must show they will be of exceptional benefit to the Australian community.

Who Can Apply?

To be considered for South Australian state nomination for the NIV, candidates must demonstrate high-level talent and internationally recognised achievements that can benefit the South Australian economy. The state is particularly interested in the following categories of talent:

1. Global Researchers and Thought Leaders: Those with achievements such as national research grants, keynote appearances at top conferences, recognised patents, or high-impact academic publications.

2. Entrepreneurs: Individuals who can prove a track record of commercialising innovative products or services, or have developed high-growth startups that create jobs for South Australians. Notably, there is no minimum investment threshold for nomination.

3. Innovative Investors: People with a history of supporting innovative ventures or leading companies to IPO. Investments into managed funds are only considered in exceptional cases.

4. Creative Talent: Individuals with significant achievements and international-level recognition in creative fields.

5. Other Globally Talented Individuals: Case-by-case consideration for those who have major international achievements not fitting the above categories.
