Thousands of Australians joined ‘March for Australia’ rallies across multiple cities on Sunday, protesting against the country’s growing immigration levels, particularly targeting Indian migrants. Demonstrations were held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, and other locations, according to the group’s website.
The March for Australia group claims that mass migration has “torn at the bonds that held our communities together” and alleges a rise in “anti-Australian hatred” and foreign conflicts spilling into local communities. Flyers distributed by the group carried divisive slogans, including:
“More Indians in five years, than Greeks and Italians in 100. This isn’t a slight cultural change, it’s a replacement plain and simple.”
These messages have drawn widespread condemnation from the Australian government.
Government Response: “We Stand Against Hate”
Senior government ministers have strongly denounced the rallies, warning that they are being fuelled by extremist groups.
Murray Watt, a senior minister in the Labor government, told Sky News:
“We don't support rallies like this that are about spreading hate and dividing our community. These events are organised and promoted by neo-Nazi groups.”
Earlier this week, the Anthony Albanese government released a statement opposing the weekend protests, emphasising that:
“All Australians, no matter their heritage, have the right to feel safe and welcome in our community.”
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke echoed this sentiment, stressing that such activism undermines national unity:
“We stand with modern Australia against these rallies – nothing could be less Australian.”
Strong Stand for Multiculturalism
Minister for Multicultural Affairs Anne Aly reaffirmed Australia’s long-standing commitment to diversity, calling multiculturalism “an integral and valued part of Australia's national identity.”
She stated:
“We stand with all Australians, no matter where they were born, against those who seek to divide us and intimidate migrant communities. We will not be intimidated. This brand of far-right activism grounded in racism and ethnocentrism has no place in modern Australia.”
A Divided Debate
The rallies have sparked a wider national debate on immigration policy, social cohesion, and community safety. While organisers claim the protests are about protecting Australian values, critics argue they are fuelled by misinformation and racism.
With India now one of Australia’s largest sources of skilled migrants and international students, the government has made it clear that it will continue to promote inclusivity and reject extremist rhetoric.
